Argentina is the polo capital of the world. The best polo players and polo ponies train and play here. Rider and horse move as though they are one animal, with a thrilling combination of coordination, grace and power.
Who do you think considers themselves to be more handsome, horse or rider?
The polo fields and stadium in the Palermo district of Buenos Aires host the Palermo Open championships each November and December, the most prestigious polo tournament in the world. We have attended several times. After an afternoon of polo, we like to go to Pizza y Espuma our favorite neighborhood restaurant in Palermo. A perfect end to a perfect day.
Some of the polo matches are held in the main stadium, and some are held on an adjacent field where you can stand at ground level right next to the horses as they thunder by.
The polo ponies are as majestic as they are athletic.
This is a photo from the apartment where our son lived. It overlooked the Palermo polo stadium, shown in this photo from his balcony. In the foreground is the largest mosque in Latin America. To the right is the Hippodromo and then Rio de la Plata, which is near the Aeropuerto Jorge Newberry.
The grand architectural style of this building seems rather overdone, as normally cities do not erect buildings this ornate just to house the water department. Last week we showed a close up of one of the entrances to this building, so we decided to show the building facade this week.
