There were lots of white peacocks strolling the gardens of the palace on Isola Bella, or Beautiful Island, one of the three Borromean Islands in Lake Maggiore in northern Italy. I had never seen white peacocks before, but they seemed even more proud of their plumage than their colorful cousins.
This photo shows the setting of the gardens at the palace on Isola Bella. This island has been in the same family since 1632, when a small fishing village was chosen as the site for a palace by a very prominent family. Unfortunately, we were there on a cloudy day, although I don't think there is any such thing as a bad day in the Italian lake country.
The unusual birds strolling the gardens of the Borremeo Islands included this colorful hen.
The gardens on Isola Bella are very formal, with elaborate and extensive terraces, statuary, and heavily sculpted shrubbery. That is a wall of roses two levels down from the top.
