My husband took this photo from the open top of our jeep on the first day of our photo safari. It shows how close we often got to the animals. It also shows the t-shirt I had to buy at the gift shop at our hotel in Arusha, as our luggage did not arrive and we had to stock up on clothes, etc. before heading out to the bush on the safari, but fortunately our suitcases arrived the next day.
This ostrich family was quite content to occupy the road. We were content to photograph them.
Like the ostriches, elephants can walk where ever they want. I assume that they walk single file to take advantage of the trampled grass in the path.
When people think of African animals, they usually think of large animals such as elephants, lions, giraffes, hippos, rhinos, and zebra. There are delightful smaller animals as well, such as this family of guinea hens, with the parents attentive to make sure that their brood crossed the road safely.
I think that this adorable Maasai child captures the optimism of youth.
