This gentleman was our jeep driver at Wadi Rum, a desert area several hours south of Petra. It was the slocation of the filming of Lawrence of Arabia, and was an area where the real T.E. Lawrence conducted his operations during the Arab Revolt against the Turks in 1917-18.
Wadi Rum reminded us of Monument Valley, Arizona, with a landscape of sandstone buttes in a desert of sand dunes.
There are petroglyphs in Wadi Rum. It appears that early man in this area was inspired to create art depicting camels. It is amazing that prehistoric people could even survive in this arid territory.
This looks like a scene from Lawrence of Arabia. Wadi Rum is 37 miles (60 km) east of Aqaba, the site of one of Lawrence's major victories in leading Arabs against the Ottoman Turks.
This butte is called The Seven Pillars of Wisdom, named in the 1980's after T.E. Lawrence's memoirs. Lawrence of Arabia is one of my husband's favorite movies.
