Today is Easter, so we will share photos that focus on the events commemorated by Easter, taken during our trip to Jerusalem earlier this month. The top photo is one of the stations of the Cross. Every Friday throughout the year the Franciscans reenact Christ's walk carrying the cross to the crucifixion.
This scene is inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, believed by many to be the site of the crucifixion. This shows the silhouette of a Greek Orthodox chapel located inside the rotunda of the church. This chapel is built over the spot where Christ's body is considered to have been laid to rest.
Although the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was full of throngs of people crowding around the most sacred of its features, a walk around its perimeter nevertheless revealed quiet spots for reflection. The Church contains chapels that are under the control of the Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Armenian Orthodox faiths.
This is dome of the portion of the church built by the Crusaders. The dome was rebuilt and mosaic of Christ installed after a 1927 earthquake. Our tour guide, a Palestinian Israeli citizen, told us that the three Christian faiths have resolved the issue of who should control the doors to the church by giving the keys to a Muslim who opens and closes the church each day, rather than conferring greater authority on each other.
This Greek Orthodox chapel within the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is built on the spot where people consider the cross to been located when Christ was crucified.
