Following up on last week's photos, we are showing some more photos from Colonia del Sacramento. Even the backyards here have color and charm.
With backyards such as the first photo, would you expect anything less colorful and charming for the front doorways of Colonia?
Believe it or not, this is the "modern" section of Colonia. This is outside the old colonial walled city, which explains why there are cars on the streets and the streets are much wider, but not wide enough to escape the generous shade of the trees.
Colonia is known for the old cars that residents have saved and continue to drive. But after a car is no longer running, why not use it as a planter?
Colonia used to be a Portuguese colony, so of course it has a tradition of exquisite decorative tiles.
The ruins of the colonial buildings next to the old lighthouse provide shapes and patterns to the stone and brick work.
A bougainvillea explodes in color to compete with the architecture for attention.
This is a typical street scene in Colonia, with the lighthous in the background.
