Spectacular Bhutan

I mentioned a few weeks ago in a post that we went to Bhutan on a trip timed to enable a visit to the Punakha festival, the first of the season.  The first two photos are from that festival.  It makes sense that the season's first festival would be in Punakha because it is at a lower elevation and is warmer than most of Bhutan.
A monk carries two of the drums used in the music and dance in the temple, or dzong.  The Punakha dzong was built in 1637 and its full name in Bhutanese means Palace of Great Happiness.  The four story high quilted thangka that covered the palace facade inside the courtyard is partially visible behind the spectators in the photo above.
Many pedestrian bridges across rivers in Bhutan have prayer flags strung across them.
The architecture of Bhutan has many charming details.
We hiked up to this temple built on the top of a ridge.  As you would expect for a Himalayan Kingdom, Bhutan is mountainous.  Many of the temples and monasteries are situated in mountainside locations.
